Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome

It is a clinical syndrome of severe difficulty of breathing ( dyspnoea) of rapid onset, reduce oxygen content in the blood (hypoxemia), and diffuse pulmonary infiltrates which can lead to the respiratory failure.
There are many causes which can lead to the development of the ARDS. These causes include toxic inhalation, lung infections, trauma, severe sepsis syndrome and/or bacterial pneumonia, trauma, multiple transfusions, aspiration of gastric contents, and drug overdose etc. Among those causes the bacterial pneumonia is the commonest cause. ARDS is caused by diffuse lung injury from many underlying medical and surgical disorders. The clinical features of ARDS are difficulty in breathing, chest pain, confusion, etc.
There is a another condition which is similar to the ARDS which is called Acute lung injury(ALI). This conditions is a less severe disorder than that of ARDS but has
the potential to evolve into ARDS .
